BottomAndra Putnis is an Australian writer with Latvian heritage living in Canberra with her parter and two children on Ngunnawal and Ngambri country.
Her first book, Stories My Grandmothers Didn’t Tell Me charts the life stories of her Latvian grandmothers – Alīne Putnis and Milda Bērziņš – including their early lives in Latvia, all they went through to survive the Soviet and Nazi occupations during 1940-1944, experiences of displaced peoples’ camps in Germany and struggles to create new lives in Newcastle, Australia.
Andra continues to study intergenerational storytelling, including through finalising a Masters of Culture, Health and Medicine at the Australian National University.
Stories My Grandmothers Didn’t Tell Me is published in Australia by Allen & Unwin. It is to be translated into Latvian and published in Latvia by Zvaigzne ABC in 2025-26.
