BottomMelissa is a medical doctor who specialises in adolescent and youth health. She trained in general practice and has worked in a youth health clinic with disadvantaged young people for over 25 years. Most of her career has been as an academic focusing on research around access to health care for young people, adolescent sexuality and sexual health. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. As the longest-serving medical consultant and writer behind the iconic ‘Dolly Doctor’ column (from 1993 – 2016) she has had unique insights into the worries and concers of adolescents, about puberty, sex, health and relationships. This has inspired her to write several books for adolescents (with collaborator Yumi Stynes), the latest being Welcome to Sex. Melissa grew up in Malaysia until her own adolescence and is a mother of four (now adult) children. She has long been an advocate for the rights of young people have honest and accurate information about their bodies, consent, emotions, sex and pleasure.
