In 2018 Stephen published the highly acclaimed The Sydney Wars – Conflict in the early colony 1788-1817. In 2020, The Sydney Wars was the inaugural winner of the Les Carlyon Award for the writing of military history. In 2021 he published Gudyarra The First Wiradyuri War of Resistance – The Bathurst War, 1822–1824 which traced the anti-colonial resistance warfare by Wiradyuri people that occurred across central west New South Wales. Stephen’s third book on the Australian Wars is The Rising – War in the Colony of NSW 1838-1844 and will be published by NewSouth press in April 2025.
