BottomChris Mansell’s experimental 101 Quads came out this year with Puncher & Wattmann/Thorny Devil Press as the first in their visual poetics series. The book, and visual works based on it, were shown in her exhibition (Words Becoming) at WordXImage gallery in June. The other book, a more narrative work, published this year was Foxline (Flying Islands Press). This book was prompted by seeing 200 dead foxes strung up by their ankles on a fence line just out of Castlemaine, Victoria. Here the two main characters deal with their sense of displacement and their connection with each other and the land, sometimes in dialogue, sometimes in their own singular voices.
Newcastle Writers Festival would like to acknowledge the Awabakal and Worimi peoples, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the festival takes place, and recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging and extend this respect to all First Nations people attending our festival.
