The finalists in the 2025 joanne burns Microlit Awards have been announced. Congratulations to the 10 finalists in the Hunter region category: Joanna Atherfold Finn, Magdalena Ball, Sharon Douglas, Helen Hopcroft, Jacquelyn Leigh, Brenda Proudfoot, Deborah Van Heerkeren, Jodi Vial, Cedar Whelan, and Karen Whitelaw.
Entrants were asked to respond in no more than 200 words to the theme of ‘ricochet’.
Ricochet, an anthology featuring prize finalists and edited by judges Cassandra Atherton and Paul Hetherington, will be launched at the 2025 Newcastle Writers Festival in April.
Cassandra and Paul, both leading experts in the microlit form, said they were delighted by the high volume of well-crafted entries this year. ‘It is a marvel,’ they said, ‘how the smallest works are able to resonate profoundly, ricocheting through the mind long after the final word.’
This award honours the work of experimental poet, joanne burns and is co-sponsored by the Newcastle Writer Festival and Spineless Wonders. Winners of the National and Hunter categories will be announced before the end of the year.
